A spiritual successor to the McLaren F1, the McLaren P1 was designed, engineered and built to be the best driver’s car in the world, pushing boundaries further than any of its rivals and redefining the concept of the supercar. Powered by the same mid-mounted twin-turbo V8 engine as the one fitted to the McLaren 12C, the P1’s power unit was significantly reworked to incorporate the new Instant Power Assist System (IPAS) electric motor. By itself, the V8 produced an already astonishing 727bhp, but, in conjunction with the 176bhp electric motor, one of the most powerful hybrid powertrains ever fitted to a car, the combined powertrain output is 916PS (903hp).
The McLaren P1 remains a stunning piece of automotive design, and a perfect example of McLaren’s ‘form follows function’ design philosophy. Every surface was designed to work; every part given the same aerodynamic consideration to maximise the car’s performance. The P1 was one of the most technically complex cars McLaren had ever created, with all the systems collaborating to deliver both performance and driver reward. As such, it was a showcase for the knowledge and passion of the engineering team that created it and the Formula 1 inspired technology from McLaren’s racing division. Active aerodynamics and Drag Reduction System meant the P1 can maximise downforce and reduce drag, generating a peak of 600kg of downforce; a new type of ceramic carbon was used in the brake discs that could absorb 50 per cent more energy than conventional ceramic rotors; McLaren-designed Brake Steer technology ensured maximum grip in the corners; and the RaceActive Chassis Control system, one of the most advanced suspension systems ever fitted to a road car, gave the chassis unprecedented adjustability. The carbon fibre MonoCage at the heart of the P1 was made from fibres with more than five times the strength of top-grade titanium and twice the stiffness of steel, and yet the entire MonoCage, including the roof, engine air-intake snorkel and integrated battery compartment for the IPAS system, weighed just 90kg. The car’s overall dry weight is 1395kg. The bodywork was ‘shrink-wrapped’ as tightly as possible over the mechanical hard points of the car and the cockpit sits right at the centre. This approach helped to reduce frontal surface area, but also made it easier to manage airflow over the surface of the bodywork and into the engine’s roof snorkel intake and to the active aero components. It worked very efficiently, whilst making the car look dramatic and beautiful.
The P1 underwent a comprehensive test and validation programme process like no other, designed to ensure that the car and its state-of-the-art powertrain could deliver its extraordinary breadth of capability anywhere an owner might choose to take it. Only 375 McLaren P1s were made.
This fine 1:8 scale model of the McLaren P1, which is available in either a Volcano Yellow, Volcano Orange or Volcano Red, has been handcrafted and assembled using detailed colour and material specifications, and original CAD data supplied directly from McLaren Automotive. Furthermore, it has undergone detailed scrutiny by both engineering and design teams to ensure complete accuracy of representation. Every Amalgam 1:8 scale model is supplied in a luxury black presentation box and mounted on a carbon fibre or leather base protected by a clear acrylic dust cover. The model title, original branding and edition number are displayed on polished stainless steel plaques mounted at the front end of the base.
The model may be available now or to build with a lead time of a round 3 months depending on stock levels.
The McLaren P1 is limited to 375 pieces.
